Words to Remember

This wallet commemorates the words of Oberst Birger Eriksen, in command of Oscarsborg Fortress during the German invasion of Norway in April 1940. As a hostile invasion fleet forced its way toward Oslo, Eriksen had received no firm orders on whether or not to oppose the force. In the early hours of April 9, as enemy ships approached his position, Eriksen decided enough was enough and ordered his batteries to fire.

When asked by subordinates if he intended to fire warning shots, this response is attributed to him: "Visst fanden skal det skytes med skarpt!" Or, roughly translated, "Of course we're firing live ammunition!"
